EFFECT OF GENDER INEQUALITY IN CULTURE (by Izzat)

Have you heard about gender inequality in culture before? Gender inequality in culture means discrimination against men or women who are not treated equally because of traditions. Nowadays, gender inequality in some cultures is not new to us anymore. Many people think that is normal and keep looking down on this issue. The truth is the effect of gender inequality is beyond anyone's imagination. It can have significant impacts on people's life which are people's socioeconomic status, people's freedom and people's mental health.

First of all, some cultures didn't allow women to work. They expected women to be in their houses do house chores, take care of the children and serve their husbands. Some people even think that women are useless because they can't do heavy work and believe that men do better in jobs than women. For example, The Japan Times reported women in Japan quit their job after getting married because only men have to work and women have to take care of their house. Therefore, women can't make their own money and only get expenses for groceries from their husbands. They also have to let their career go, and their education before getting married will be pointless. In the end, family socioeconomic will go on downgrading.

Other than that, people's safety, especially women, cannot be guaranteed any more. It happened because most men take advantage of women. After all, they think that women are weak. There are many cases where women get sexually harassed while going out, even in crowded places such as trains and roadside shops. The women will be touched without consent for proof; in New Delhi, India, over 1023 cases were reported with the highest number of harassment against women in that country. Consequently, the women will have their freedom removed from them because of the fear of the men.

Last but not least, needless to say that people who have been discriminated against before experience depression at different levels depending on their survival ability. It also can affect their social skills because some of them might be afraid of going out to talk to other people. These things can lead to mental problems such as depression, anxiety and an inferiority complex. There are many cases in which people have suffered from these problems and decided to commit suicide. Thus, they become timid and prefer to stay in their shells; even worse, they will live while distrusting others.

To sum up, we should avoid our ancestors' faith in this gender inequality in culture. Everyone should treat others equally for a better future for the new generation that is about to come.
