Girls Can’t Rule? (Descriptive) ~by Diana

Gender inequality really exists even in schools. It doesn't matter if you’re a boy or a girl it occurs in both genders because I had experienced it when I was in highschool. I was an independent and hardworking student who always dreamed to be the school president but everything crumbled down after one incident.

It was the early year of 2019 where everyone was busy voting for school president. I was excited because I planned to be a school president that year. I was in the classroom getting ready for my speech before the voting session began. Meanwhile, my best friend Lisa told me to hurry up because it was almost my turn to give the voting speech. I felt a bag of nerves the moment I saw a crowd of students waiting in front of the podium for the speech. However, I was grateful to have Lisa supporting me from behind.

It was time. The tension’s getting higher and higher. The moment I stepped up to the podium, I heard Danny's supporters booing me and putting banners which said that I cannot win the election and more. I was hesitant but I stood up and gave my speech perfectly because my supporters supported me big time. I felt a sense of relief. I went to Lisa after giving my speech. She told me to relax because she's so confident that I will become school president after hearing my speech. But in my heart, I'm sure that many will vote for Danny because of his wonderful speech, his good looks, and his dozens of supporters. Therefore, we went home to get ready for tomorrow’s results.

The awaited day has come. We went to school as usual. During recess time, we saw a group of students crowding the school’s bulletin board and cheering for Danny. I didn't really have high expectations because I knew that he would get the position because of his high intelligence and influential speech. Lisa comforted me and told me if I didn't win the election, I still did my very best. She told me it's best for me to stay in class and empty my mind while she checks the votes and comments on the bulletin board.

Lisa was dumbfounded to see that my votes were not that much of a difference than Danny. My votes were 58 Danny his was 60. I was so close but it’s okay. However, Lisa was gobsmacked after reading the comments saying things like “Amy can’t fit the standards to be the school president because she’s a girl,” “A girl cannot lead,” “Danny is handsome enough to be the class president.” I was so angry hearing those comments because people still discriminate against genders for many purposes including in school. I really hoped that people would realize that girls can be leaders too.
